Sexuality and gender diverse porn is a growing genre of mainstream porn and Rainbow young people tell us that their experiences with porn can be complex and conflicting.
- Some Rainbow young people may go to porn to view diverse sexual representations and to learn, explore and affirm their sexuality and/or gender.
- Watching sexuality and gender diverse porn can be considered a way to explore and view same-sex or gender representations.
- Many of the aggressive and dominant scripts in heterosexual porn are also found in sexuality and gender diverse porn.
- Sexuality and gender diverse porn contains some transphobic, biphobic, and homophobic stereotypes and scripts.
- Mainstream lesbian porn is created for the male gaze and some lesbian, bisexual and trans actors are portrayed as submissive, promiscuous and/or fetishized.
- Sexuality and gender diverse actors in porn are more likely to be targets of aggression than male heterosexual actors (54).
- Some gay porn can have poor messaging regarding safety, oral and anal sex.
- Some studies indicate gay porn can reinforce homophobia and heteronormativity.
Special attention should be paid to rainbow young people
who may go to porn to learn about sex or to affirm their sexuality, but are disturbed by the scripts, have uncomfortable viewing experiences, or may need support.
